Guidance on Visiting Parks

Last updated: June 19, 2020

Need a change of scenery? Depending on what’s open near you, you may be able to explore your local parks and nature trails.

But before you head out to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine, it’s important to keep safety in mind to help protect yourself and others from COVID-19.

Park and recreational safety tips:

  • Always stay at home if you are experiencing any symptoms or feeling sick.
  • Stay local. Traveling far distances can increase your chance of spreading or being exposed to the virus.
  • Check online to see individual park guidelines. Some states may have specific closures or limitations to facilities.
  • Stay off playgrounds. These surfaces can be challenging to keep clean and disinfected.
  • Steer clear of overcrowded parks or open spaces where people are not following safety guidelines.
  • Go alone or only with people in your own household.
  • Maintain social distancing of six feet at all times even if you or others are wearing masks.
  • Enjoy the water but keep space between yourself and others.
  • Avoid organized group activities or contact sports like basketball, soccer or football.
  • Use hand sanitizer often and wash your hands directly before and after you leave the house.

Have fun and don’t forget your sunscreen!
