Giving Back during COVID-19

Last updated: December 14, 2020

Find ways to support others who need it most

COVID-19 has certainly impacted our daily lives. But some individuals and groups have been affected more than others.

Let’s do our part by supporting those who need additional help. Donating your time, money, or even a small act of kindness to a neighbor can make a difference during these difficult times. And in a year when one of the best things we could do for our communities has been to simply “stay home”, it can feel good to take a more active role in giving back. Studies have even shown that helping others can boost your overall well-being. Here are some ideas for you to explore.

Connect with Your Community

You may be surprised to find that schools, businesses, and non-profit organizations in your area already have giving networks in place. Try searching by zip code to support them. Or simply turn to your closest neighbors and ask if they need assistance with things like groceries, meals, or yardwork.

Donate Food

Food banks are experiencing an overwhelming increase in the amount of people who need food assistance. Learn more about ways you can help fight hunger by checking out Feeding America. Or look to your local Meals on Wheels program to support your neighbors.

Give Blood

Blood and plasma donations are in critical demand during the pandemic. So much so it is considered an essential activity. Make an appointment with organizations such as the American Red Cross or find additional ways to support efforts if you are not eligible to donate. And you can be assured that most blood drives have strict safety measures in place to protect donors and staff.

Donate PPE

Healthcare and essential workers are still facing personal protective equipment (PPE) shortages. To help keep them safe, reach out to your local hospital or county health department to see how you can help. Or look to national organizations like GetUsPPE or DonatePPE.

Support Local Businesses

Next time you need to buy something, turn to your community first. Local cafes, restaurants, bookstores, and small storefronts are struggling to keep their businesses up and running right now. Buying a gift card, shopping online, or getting pick up orders are great ways to show support while staying safe.

Stay Committed to COVID-19 Safety

As always, the best way to support the health and safety of others is by simply following COVID-19 safety precautions. Continue to social distance, wear your mask, and wash your hands often to protect yourself and your community.
