Holistic Help: Exploring Cancer Survivorship Resources

Last updated: June 17, 2024

The experience of living with and surviving cancer is unique to each individual. At the same time, people often share common emotions and concerns.

In this second of a two-part series in honor of National Cancer Survivors Month, we look at resources available to cancer survivors. ThedaCare Cancer Care offers a variety of programs and services that guide people through experiences common among cancer survivors.

“Cancer care extends beyond the end of treatment,” says Emily Pohl, a Nurse Practitioner with ThedaCare Cancer Care. “People need support, as life does not automatically return to ‘normal’ after completing treatment. Individuals may experience longstanding physical and emotional challenges.”

Exploring Survivorship Resources

1. LIVESTRONG

LIVESTRONG through the YMCA of the Fox Cities is a free 12-week physical activity program designed to help cancer survivors improve their strength using exercise. It offers a fitness regimen that’s individualized to each cancer survivor.

Participants work with YMCA staff trained in supportive cancer care. The program can help people achieve their goals such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem.

While enrolled in the program, survivors and a loved one or caregiver receive all the benefits of the Y membership. This allows them to use the facility and take part in value-added or designated classes while actively participating in the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA exercise program.

2. Support Groups

“Support groups can offer a wonderful environment for cancer survivors to be around people who have been through similar situations and share a common purpose,” says Crystal Guttman, a Nurse Practitioner with ThedaCare Cancer Care. “People then can feel less isolated or lonely. This can lead to less depression, anxiety, or distress. It can also help empower people and facilitate healing.”

Support groups offered through ThedaCare Cancer Care include:

  • HOPE. This group provides education, empowerment, and inspiration for patients and families living through and beyond cancer. It’s offered the third Wednesday of each month from 5-6 p.m. at ThedaCare Regional Cancer Center. People can also join virtually via Zoom.
  • You Are Not Alone. This group is designed for newly diagnosed patients, survivors, and family members of those with breast cancer. It meets the third Monday of the month from 3-4 p.m. at ThedaCare Regional Cancer Center and virtually via Zoom.
  • Gynecology Oncology Cancer Support Group. This group is for women in any stage of gynecological cancer. It meets the third Thursday of the month from 4:30-6 p.m. at ThedaCare Regional Cancer Center and virtually via Zoom.
  • Support for People with Oral and Head and Neck Cancer. Support for People with Oral and Head and Neck Cancer, Inc. (SPOHNC), is a patient-directed self-help organization dedicated to meeting the emotional, physical, and humanistic needs of oral and head and neck cancer patients and their caregivers. It offers information, support, and encouragement to newly diagnosed patients, survivors, and loved ones in a friendly forum. It meets the fourth Tuesday of the month from 2:30-4 p.m. at ThedaCare Regional Cancer Center.

3. Strong in Survivorship

Strong in Survivorship is an interactive survivorship workshop. Oncology dietitians, physical therapists, and relevant guest speakers lead the sessions. The class provides plant-based recipes and samples, rotating nutrition topics, mindful movement like yoga and tai chi, and engaging conversation.

“Our goal is to meet patients where they are at in their survivorship journey, reduce stress around food choices, and provide up-to-date information regarding nutrition and exercise,” says Natalie Hartjes, a Clinical Dietitian with ThedaCare Cancer Care.

ThedaCare Cancer Care is proud to offer survivorship programs that help people throughout their entire journey.

“Living with and surviving cancers is a continuum,” Pohl says. “Through resources and support, we can help people navigate whatever emotional or physical concerns may arise.”
